same old same old.

There are not a lot of things to do in Gville NC on a Saturday evening. So we pretty much get stuck in the same old routine of going dowtown to a small bar called 519. A bar in which we have been frequenting for the past 4 years. Literally we sit in the same seats, chit chat with same bartenders, order from the same $2 domestic special, and sing along to the same bar songs. It is rather monotonous.

However monotonous it might be we find little ways to entertain ourselves while saddled up to the bar. And the most entertaining thing to do is people watch. You see our seats that we always sit in are right at the front of the bar, within a stones throw from the door where passer-bys must show proper ID to get in...or atleast proper enough ID to get in for over 21. And it is here where we see the most interesting people.

Firstly, and depressingly these people are much younger than us. Most of them have just turned 21, and some are scooting past the bouncer with an average fake ID from an older sibling. But this younger crowd has quite a different take on what should be worn downtown. Last weekend was below freezing and yet these girls were waltzing into the bar wearing backless shirts. And what is more astonishing is that in the dead of winter these ladies are more tan than I am in the summer.

Then there is a whole other phenomenon that only happens in the month right after Christmas. It is the gift card phenomenon. You see I have a theory that all these girls ask for gift cards for Christmas, and then after the holidays they rush out to buy the trendiest outfits, and accesories they can find. They buy 10 new things and wear every single one of them at the same time. From headbands, to wide belts, to huge earrings, they are decked out. Which is ok...I mean I am all for expressing yourself with an outfit, but there is a point when enough is enough. Take off one bauble...lose the faux-hawk pony tail, and remember that while Greenville might be nicknamed "Gvegas" it is nowhere near ready for the types of fashion that you guys are pulling out.

So while life in Greenville on the weekends can get rather like clockwork, the people watching never fails to impress...err...astonish...errr....make it worth the effort to go out.
